He started his career in his hometown, where he played for FK Modriča, from where he joined NK Čelik Zenica in 1971, where he won the Mitropa Cup in the following two years with his new club.
He had played with Serbian clubs FK Teleoptik, top league FK Budućnost Banatski Dvor, that, from 2005 on, was renamed to FK Banat, and Bosnian Premier League club FK Modriča.
Nikić, born to father Ilija and mother Radojka, started his career in the lower leagues with FK Modriča and NK Zvijezda Gradačac before joining FK Željezničar Sarajevo.
