The strong Family First Party vote in the 2006 election (the highest in the state) was due in part to their prominent local candidate, church minister Tom Playford, son of former Premier Sir Thomas Playford.

There has been significant attention drawn to the denomination's relationship to the Family First Party, particularly in light of the party's founder, Andrew Evans, being a former superintendent of the movement, and its one-time leader, Andrea Mason, attending an ACC church.
The Greens polled more than 260,000 primary votes across Victoria and Risstrom would have been elected but for the Australian Labor Party's decision to preference the Family First Party's candidate Steve Fielding - who subsequently defeated Risstrom on preferences despite polling fewer primary votes.
