Ghana was inhabited in pre-colonial times by a number of ancient predominantly Akan kingdoms, including the inland Empire of Ashanti and various Fante states along the coast and inland.

So, according the historian Karl Watson, most slaves imported into Barbados were Akans (Ashanti and Fante from Ghana), Ewe and Fon (coming both from Benin).
This group includes the Akuapem, the Akyem, the Ashanti, the Baoulé, the Brong/Abron, the Fante and the Nzema peoples covering the Brong Ahafo, Ashanti, Western, Central, and Eastern Regions, as well as portions of the midsection of the Volta Region, and into North Ghana.
Although three years of his childhood were spent in Accra, his family are Fante from Ghana, for the most part he was brought up in London.
