After the Māori had removed the British colors from Flagstaff Hill in Kororareka three times, they came back to remove it again.

Flagstaff Hill is covered by two State Electoral Divisions the state electoral district of Fisher, whose current member is Dr. Bob Such (Independent) and the state electoral district of Davenport, whose current member is Iain Evans (Liberal Party).

The team sports hub of Flagstaff Hill is the Flagstaff Hill Sports and Community Centre, home of the Flagstaff Hill Football Club, Flagstaff Hill Cricket Club, Flagstaff Hill Tennis Club, Flagstaff Athletics, Happy Valley Netball Club and Southern Hills Little Athletics.

It is named after the hill by that name in the area, where Colonel William Light erected a flagstaff during his survey, which was then used as a trig point.

It was planned to span a gently sloping valley between small hills (knolls) (Batman's Hill, Flagstaff Hill and Eastern Hill) and roughly parallel to the course of the Yarra River.
