The team colors of garnet, orange and silver were taken from the three college football teams most popular in the area; garnet from the Florida State Seminoles, orange from the Florida Gators, and silver from the pants worn by the Georgia Bulldogs.

Bowden's own father, now deceased, was a first cousin of former Florida State Seminoles football coach Bobby Bowden.
On September 29, 1956, the Seilers brought Uga I with them to Sanford Stadium for the first Georgia Bulldogs football home game of the year against the Florida State Seminoles.
