35th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment

The 35th camped on Meridian Hill; moved to Arlington House and was engaged for a time in construction work on Fort Tillinghast and Fort Craig, and moved to Falls Church, Virginia, where it passed the winter of 1861-62.

In 1862, during the New Mexico Campaign of the American Civil War a Confederate force approached the ford at Valverde, six miles north of Fort Craig, hoping to cut Union communications between the fort and their headquarters in Santa Fe.

However before he could return to join his new regiment, the three companies of the 7th Infantry that had moved to Fort Craig were involved in the Battle of Val Verde in New Mexico Territory.
