Michael Simpson Culbertson

Second Lieutenant Culbertson then served with the First Artillery at Fort Preble in Portland, Maine, and Hancock Barracks in Houlton, Maine.

Southern Maine Community College

The campus is also historically significant as the campus was once home to the military installment, Fort Preble, and old bunkers are still on the campus.

During the summer of 1952, the Institute was moved to the site of the former Fort Preble in South Portland, where it assumed the name of Southern Maine Vocational Institute.


Thomas Lincoln Casey, Sr.

During the American Civil War he oversaw construction and improvements to coastal fortifications in Maine, completing the massive Fort Knox on the Penobscot River as well as work on Fort Preble, Fort Scammel and Fort Gorges near Portland.
