This road follows the path of a historic trail that ran from Fort Edmonton to Fort Victoria, known as "Victoria Trail" from the perspective of Edmontonians.

Born in Devon, England, Pearse left England in 1851 to become a surveyor for the Hudson’s Bay Company at Fort Victoria on Vancouver Island.
Matters came to a head when Lobengula approved a raid to forcibly extract tribute from a Mashona chief in the district of the town of Fort Victoria, which inevitably led to a clash with the Company.
In 1892 the brothers opened a successful trading business in Fort Victoria in Victoria Province in Rhodesia.
Unable to find passes to the Pacific north of the 49th Parallel they reunited with Hector in Fort Colvile, and traveled 598 miles downstream on the Columbia River to Fort Vancouver and the Pacific Coast, then onto Fort Victoria, then returned by ship through San Francisco and Panama, then to Montreal and back to Liverpool.
Soon miners began using stern wheelers from Fort Victoria (now present day Victoria) on Vancouver Island to New Westminster.
The name of Fort Victoria was officially imposed by The Duchess of York, on 19 June.
