12 unusual facts about Fourier series

Aliasing

Sinusoids are an important type of periodic function, because realistic signals are often modeled as the summation of many sinusoids of different frequencies and different amplitudes (with a Fourier series or transform).

The bandlimited sawtooths are synthesized from the sawtooth waveform's Fourier series such that no harmonics above the Nyquist frequency are present.

AMBER

Note that a single bond may have more than one of these terms, such that the total torsional energy is expressed as a Fourier series.

Cusp form

In number theory, a branch of mathematics, a cusp form is a particular kind of modular form, distinguished in the case of modular forms for the modular group by the vanishing in the Fourier series expansion (see q-expansion)

Discrete transform

For example, the discrete-time Fourier transform and the Z-transform, from discrete time to continuous frequency, and the Fourier series, from continuous time to discrete frequency, are outside the class of discrete transforms.

Downsampling

The abscissa of the top pair of graphs represents the discrete-time Fourier transform (DTFT), which is a Fourier series representation of a periodic summation of X(f):

Duffing equation

Expansion in a Fourier series will provide an equation of motion to arbitrary precision.

ISO/IEC 18000-3

To ensure that tags replying on different channels are simultaneously received tag replies are band limited to reduce data and subcarrier harmonic levels.

Lancelot Stephen Bosanquet

Lancelot Stephen Bosanquet (26 December 1903 St. Stephen's-by-Saltash, Cornwall, England – 10 January 1984 Cambridge) was a British mathematician who worked in analysis, especially Fourier series.

X-ray standing waves

The characteristic shape of Y p can be used to derive precise structural information about the surface atoms because the two parameters f H (coherent fraction) and P H (coherent position) are directly related to the Fourier representation of the atomic distribution function.

Zygmunt Zalcwasser

Zygmunt Zalcwasser (1898–1943 Treblinka extermination camp) was a Polish mathematician working on Fourier series who introduced the Zalcwasser rank.
