(The organ version was both commissioned and first performed by Eric DeLamarter at Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago on October 20, 1916.) The piece is one of Sowerby's most popular, and was inspired by a poem by Bliss Carman entitled "Autumn".
He was pastor of churches at Utica and Cortlandt, New York, until 1900; then of the Brown Memorial Presbyterian Church, Baltimore, until 1909; and in that year became pastor of the Fourth Presbyterian Church, Chicago.
Halverson was a minister of the former United Presbyterian Church in the United States of America and served from 1958 until 1981 as the Senior Pastor of the Fourth Presbyterian Church, in Bethesda, Maryland.
