The elections were a watershed in Gibraltar politics, as they saw the first win by the Gibraltar Socialist Labour Party (GSLP), led by Joe Bossano, whose candidates took 58% of the popular vote and eight of the fifteen seats available in the Gibraltar House of Assembly.
The GSD had ten candidates (all of which were elected), Bossano's party the Gibraltar Socialist Labour Party (GSLP) had seven candidates (four of which were elected) and the Gibraltar Liberal Party (GLP) led by Dr. Joseph Garcia had three candidates (all of which were elected).
The head of Government is the Chief Minister, currently the Hon. Fabian Picardo, of the Gibraltar Socialist Labour Party (GSLP), who have been in office since 9 December 2011 in alliance with the Gibraltar Liberal Party (Liberals) following a general election.
