It is a remake of the Golden Bear winning, American motion picture 12 Angry Men (1957), which was directed by Sidney Lumet, the film in turn was an adaptation from a teleplay of the same name by Reginald Rose.
Martínez Lázaro's 1978 film Las palabras de Max shared a Golden Bear at the 28th Berlin International Film Festival with García Sánchez's La Trucha/The Trout.
He is also well known for his collaboration and deep friendship with Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård, having directed him in three movies; Zero Kelvin, Aberdeen and En ganske snill mann (2010), the latter being nominated for the Golden Bear at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival.
