He was Lieutenant-Governor of Van Diemen's Land from 1843 to 1846.
Major Sir George Cumine Strahan KCMG (9 December 1838 – 17 February 1887) was a British military officer and colonial administrator, best known as the Governor of Tasmania from 1881 to 1886.

From November 1923 to June 1924, Ewing was appointed Administrator of Tasmania, while awaiting the arrival of the new governor Captain Sir James O'Grady.
He joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1976, finishing his training in 1980 he underwent training as a Principal Warfare Officer and in 1983 was posted as the naval Aide-de-Camp to the Governor of Tasmania Sir James Plimsoll.
Work commenced on the project in 1963 and it is named after Thomas Corbett, 2nd Baron Rowallan, the former Governor of Tasmania.
On the opening night the station was officially inaugurated by Lord Rowallan, the Governor of Tasmania.
They had one daughter, Georgiana Susan Copley, who married Sir Charles Du Cane, Governor of Tasmania.

He was private secretary to Sir Frederick Weld when Governor of Tasmania for two years, and was commandant of the local forces of that colony from June 1878 to May 1880.
