Due to the rapid growth of the Greater Houston area (which includes Galveston County), the commute time required to board the ferry has rapidly increased (during the summer the wait can be up to two hours), which slows emergency response times (there are few emergency services, and no hospitals, on the peninsula, thus requiring trips to Galveston).
The Skeeters are also the first independent league baseball team in the Greater Houston metropolitan area since the Houston Buffaloes' final season in 1961.
With 623 students and an annual budget of over $6 million, it is one of the ten largest private schools in the greater Houston, Katy area.

The airport, the fourth largest airport in Greater Houston as of 2009, receives yearly usage from over 100 Fortune 500 companies.
