In 1900-1901 he studied at the Guildhall School of Music in London with William Hayman Cummings and Albert Visetti.
After serving in the Royal Air Force during World War II, he began musical studies at the Guildhall School of Music where he learned composition.
He has given master classes throughout the world, including the Guildhall School of Music in London, the Hochschule für Musik in Leipzig, the Estonia Music Academy in Tallinn, the Toho Gakuen School of Music and the Kunitachi School of Music in Tokyo.
He received scholarships to further his education in both the USA with Shmuel Ashkenasi and then with Yfrah Neaman at the Guildhall School of Music in England.
Her aunt, who was housekeeper to the music hall star Harry Lauder, made arrangements for Helder to train at the Guildhall School of Music with Charles Tinney.
In the UK, she performed her poetry as part of an artistic multimedia ensemble at the Royal College of Art and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama with Vuk Krakovic and Len Massey.
Alongside his acting career, Cullen has also worked as a director and as a teacher at Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London, the American Conservatory Theater School (San Francisco) and the British American Drama Academy (London).
