The Halam people are one of the Sinlung people, who are said to have lived in Tripura before the Tipra came to that land.
They have a language affinity to the Purum, Koireng, Aimol, Chiru, Kom, and Halam tribes.
The Swatantra Tripura Committee organized a conference in Agartala on November 6, 1955, in which representatives from Halam, Kuki, Tripuri, Bengali Hindu and Muslim communities took part.
