Eastleigh Athletic became one of the eight founder members of the Hampshire League in 1896 and were league champions in 1897–98, a season in which they also entered a side in the Western League where they also flourished.
This new club was formed from three different local teams along with the ashes of the defunct Town club and took the place of the ambitious Ecchinswell in Division 1 of the Hampshire League and within a year had won promotion to the Wessex League where they would enjoy great success.
