The book contains analysis of eleven chess openings but contains many elementary errors that led chess historian Harold Murray to suggest that it was prepared in a hurry.
Bell drew on a wide range of sources, including Edward Falkener, Stewart Culin, Willard Fiske, HJR Murray, John Scarne, and many others; as well as his own research and collection.
His scholarly volume, Chess In Iceland and in Icelandic Literature (Florence, 1905), was used as source material by H.J.R. Murray for A History of Chess.
