The spelling was originally "Harington Township", based on the family name "Haring", but was changed to "Harrington" in the latter part of the 19th century.
The borough of Northvale was formed on March 15, 1916, from the remaining portions of Harrington Township, based on the results of a referendum held on April 4, 1916.

The borough was originally formed on July 20, 1894, as the Borough of Schraalenburgh from portions of Harrington Township and Palisades Township, based on the results of a referendum held the previous day.
