Helen Hay Whitney (1876-1944), American poet, writer, racehorse owner/breeder, socialite, and philanthropist
The foundation was established in New York in 1943 by Joan Whitney Payson in cooperation with the estate planning of her mother, Helen Hay Whitney (1875-1944).
After Whitney died, James Rowe, Jr. went to work for Helen Hay Whitney's Greentree Stable in the latter part of 1930, replacing Thomas W. Murphy.
Force's first job was as the personal secretary of socialite Helen Hay (wife of Payne Whitney).
Commissioned in 1902 by Payne Whitney's uncle Colonel Oliver Hazard Payne as a wedding gift for his nephew and his bride, Helen Hay, the Colonel had put up $625,000 to build the five-story mansion, the construction of which was still under White's supervision when he was murdered in 1906.
