In 1858 Ruddle & Thompson were entrusted with the role of general contractors for the restoration of Hereford Cathedral under the designs of George Gilbert Scott.

Francis Alfred Skidmore (1817 – 13 November 1896) was a British metalworker best known for high profile commissions including the glass and metal roof of the Oxford University Museum of Natural History (1859), the Hereford Cathedral choir screen (1862) and the Albert Memorial (1866–1873) in London.
Hogan designed windows for several cathedrals in England including Hereford Cathedral, Rochester Cathedral, Exeter Cathedral, Carlisle Cathedral and Winchester Cathedral.
Architectural historian John Goodall believes the house has details, particularly in the ornate windows, which date it securely to before 1150, and probably to around 1148, the completion date of Hereford Cathedral, which has some similarities, notably a Norman arch etched with diamond markings that are similar to features in the Cathedral.
