On 17 July 1926, he married Beryl Dugdale, daughter of Lionel Dugdale of Crathorne, a former High Sheriff of Yorkshire, and sister of Thomas Dugdale, 1st Baron Crathorne.
In 1968 his position was High Sheriff of Yorkshire and in 1973 Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of the North Riding, Yorkshire.

The second Baronet was High Sheriff of Yorkshire in 1721, and was twice president of the old masonic lodge at York, later styled the Grand Lodge of All England.
The church is dedicated to St Michael, and was originally a private chapel and was built by Sir Edward Rodes, the High Sheriff of Yorkshire, who was a conspicuous Parliamentarian.
