Born in Kilmarnock and educated at the Patna and Loudoun Montgomery Primary Schools, and the Irvine Royal Academy, Donohoe later attended the Kilmarnock Technical College, where he received a national certificate in Engineering in 1972.
Experimental officers were either university graduates or people who had qualifications such as the Higher National Certificate, and were support staff for Scientific Officers.
Provides learning facilities for students studying towards HND, HNC and NVQ courses as well as providing facilities for Media students and evening classes for mature students.

He later went to Coleg Morgannwg in Pontypridd, and Reading College of Technology where he received a BTEC Higher National Certificate in Mathematics, Statistics and Physics in 1993.
While an apprentice he also studied for the Higher National Certificate exams at Langside College in Mount Florida and, following this, left Weirs to study full-time at the Royal Technical College, Glasgow (now the University of Strathclyde).
All courses offered by the university centre are validated by Anglia Ruskin University and include HNCs, HNDs and BA honours degrees.
