He helped Clyde achieve an eighth placed finish in the 1891–1892 campaign before briefly leaving football to join the Highland Light Infantry.
Born Adrian Hill in Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, Hilton left school at 14 and worked in an aircraft factory at the beginning of the Second World War, before being called up into the Highland Light Infantry.

He was educated at Harrow and in 1858, at the age of 19, was commissioned into the 74th Highlanders, immediately joining the regiment in India.
Through their service as Scottish Infantry Battalions in the First World War each of the Squadrons could claim the rights to a Regimental tartan; Hunting Erskine tartan from the Royal Scots Fusiliers for the Ayrshire and Lanarkshire Yeomanries, Mackenzie of Seaforth tartan from the Highland Light Infantry for the Queen's Own Royal Glasgow Yeomanry and Government tartan from the Black Watch for the Fife & Forfar Yeomanry.
A former Territorial HLI Battalion in Glasgow, the 7th (Blythswood) Battalion, the Highland Light Infantry was based at 69 Main Street, Bridgeton (now demolished and replaced by a tenement), it was converted to Royal Artillery in 1938, becoming the 83rd AA Regiment.
