unusual facts about In vivo

Hemolysis

In vivo hemolysis can be caused by a large number of medical conditions, including many Gram-positive bacteria (e.g., Streptococcus, Enterococcus, and Staphylococcus), some parasites (e.g., Plasmodium), some autoimmune disorders (e.g., drug-induced hemolytic anemia), some genetic disorders (e.g., Sickle-cell disease or G6PD deficiency), or blood with too low a solute concentration (hypotonic to cells).

Thioflavin

The dye is widely used to visualize and quantify the presence of misfolded protein aggregates called amyloid, both in vitro and in vivo (e.g., plaques composed of amyloid beta found in the brains of Alzheimer's disease patients).

Trolox

Oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) used to be an alternative measurement, but the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) withdrew these ratings in 2012 as biologically invalid, stating that no physiological proof in vivo existed to support the free-radical theory.

Ependyma

Jonas Frisén and his colleagues at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm provided evidence that ependymal cells act as reservoir cells in the forebrain, which can be activated after stroke and as in vivo and in vitro stem cells in the spinal cord.

Immunogenicity

EpiVax inc., led by CEO/CSO, Dr. Annie De Groot, MD, has a number of publications citing the process, and results, of deimmunzaiton by epitope modification for reduced immunologic potential in-vitro, in-vivo and ex-vivo.

Kavalactone

Several kavalactones (e.g. Flavokavain B, Methysticin and Yangonin) have been reported to be toxic and/or carcinogenic, although further research into these mechanisms is needed and it is not yet known if kava consumption induces toxic/carcinogenic effects in vivo.

Philippe B

In fall 2009, In collaboration with actress Sophie Cadieux, he also participated in the creation of a multi-disciplinary show (song, poetry, photography) entitled Phéromones, which was presented at the bistro In Vivo, in Montreal.

Precocious puberty

The association between LIN28 and puberty timing was validated experimentally in vivo, when it was found that mice with ectopic overexpression of LIN28 show an extended period of pre-pubertal growth and a significant delay in puberty onset.

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis

Kary Mullis conceived PCR in 1985 as an in vitro simplified reproduction of the in vivo process of DNA replication.

Southeast Asian ovalocytosis

These changes are thought to give rise to the scientifically and clinically interesting phenomenon that those with SAO exhibit: a marked in vivo resistance to infection by the causative pathogen of malaria, Plasmodium falciparum.

Spelunke in vivo

Spelunke in vivo was a festival in Gattikon, near Zürich, Switzerland.

Toxic oil syndrome

None of the in vivo or in vitro studies performed with toxic-oil-specific components, such as fatty acid anilides and esters of PAP, have provided evidence that these markers are causally involved in the pathogenesis of TOS.
