In 1998, he was a nominee for the Hans Christian Andersen Award, sometimes known as the "Nobel Prize for children's literature", is an international award given biennially by the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) in recognition of a "lasting contribution to children's literature".

The prize is awarded by an independent association Litera which associates members of all Czech literary or book-market organizations: Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Association of Booksellers and Publishers, Czech Centre of International PEN, Czech section of IBBY, Society of Czech Writers, Czech Translators’ Guild.
She continued to write several more books, including the children’s book Matabia in 1981, which received the 'Smelik Prize' from the ‘International Board on Books for Young People’.

Petričić has received numerous awards for his work including an IBBY Certificate of Honour, an Alberta Book Award for his illustrations in Tim Wynne-Jones' On Tumbledown Hill and many others.
This Is New York also received the Boy's Club of America Junior Books Award in 1961, while This Is the United Nations appeared on the International Board on Books for Young People Honor List in 1979.
The Cleaver Award is administered by a committee of three members of the Canadian section of the International Board on Books for Young People IBBY Canada.
