In 1853 James Roosevelt Bayley became the first Roman Catholic Bishop of Newark, with the Pro-Cathedral of St. Patrick serving as its seat.
He was the fourth of William and Emily (Prime) Seton's seven children; the grandson of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, founder of the American Sisters of Charity in 1809; and cousin of Archbishop James Roosevelt Bayley, first bishop of Newark and founder of Seton Hall University in 1856.
