In the final years of the Qing dynasty (1644–1911), reform advocates in the government implemented certain aspects of the modernized Japanese legal system, itself originally based on German judicial precedents (see Hundred Days' Reform).
The Center’s director, Curtis J. Milhaupt, Fuyo Professor of Japanese Law and Parker Professor of Comparative Corporate Law at Columbia Law School, is recognized as one of the world’s leading authorities on the Japanese legal system.
More than a quarter century later, under the direction of Professor Curtis J. Milhaupt CLS ’89, the Center continues its mission to enhance the understanding of the Japanese legal system within the Columbia University community and beyond.
