Wintu people

The first recorded encounter between Wintu and Euro-Americans dates from the 1826 expedition of Jedediah Smith, followed by an 1827 expedition led by Peter Skene Ogden.


Rocky Mountain Fur Company

They posted advertisements in St. Louis newspapers seeking "One Hundred enterprising young men . . . to ascend the river Missouri to its source, there to be employed for one, two, or three years." Among those hired were Jedediah Smith, the four Sublette brothers, including William and Milton, Jim Beckwourth, Thomas Fitzpatrick and David Edward Jackson, who in 1826, bought the Company and for the next seven years it continued to prosper.

William Wolfskill

The party was a “dream team” of mountain men that included Jedediah Smith, the first American to cross the Sierra into California in the 1820s, Kit Carson and George C. Yount.

Ygnacio Martínez

In 1827, as a lieutenant stationed at the Presidio of San Francisco, Martínez met with the American explorer Jedediah Smith and helped to facilitate the continuation of Smith's northward travels toward the Columbia River.
