CCHA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament

Starting in 1982, the CCHA Tournament first round was held at the rink of the higher seed with Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan hosting the CCHA Tournament semifinals and finals.


1979 World Series

They were also the last road team to win Game 7 of the championship round, in any major league sport, until the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Detroit Red Wings 2–1 at Joe Louis Arena to win the 2009 Stanley Cup Finals.

He attended Providence College from 1982–1986, and was the MVP of the 1985 Hockey East postseason tournament following a 2–1 double overtime victory over top-seeded Boston College at the Providence Civic Center, and the MVP of the 1985 NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Championship, despite a 2–1 loss in the championship game to RPI at Joe Louis Arena.

Legend of the Octopus

Al Sobotka, the Joe Louis Arena head ice manager and one of the two Zamboni drivers, is the person who retrieves the thrown octopuses from the ice.
