It was rediscovered by the American Wolfe Expedition in 1885, when the Palmyrene Gate was photographed by John Henry Haynes.

Enlil

Inscriptions found at Nippur, where extensive excavations were carried on during 1888–1900 by John P. Peters and John Henry Haynes, under the auspices of the University of Pennsylvania, show that Enlil was the head of an extensive pantheon.

Nippur

The work involved four seasons of excavation between 1889 and 1900 and was led by John Punnett Peters, John Henry Haynes, and Hermann Volrath Hilprecht.


John Punnett Peters

He was professor of Old Testament languages and literature at the Protestant Episcopal Divinity School in Philadelphia (1884 -91) and professor of Hebrew at the University of Pennsylvania (1885-93) and from 1888 to 1895 conducted excavations at Nippur with John Henry Haynes and Hermann Volrath Hilprecht.
