He was born into an artistic London family, (he was the nephew of the painter John Lucas) and originally trained as a woodcarver, but turned his attention to portrait painting and entered first the St. Martin's Lane Art School and later the Royal Academy Schools.
He was the author of Conversations with Klemperer (1973) and Otto Klemperer: His Life and Times (2 vols, 1983-1996; 2nd vol completed by John Lucas).

Born in Washington, D.C. as the son of former NBA player and coach John Lucas and his wife DeEdgra, Lucas once lived in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania and played for the same school as current NBA All-Star Kobe Bryant (though 3 years after Bryant left and only on the junior varsity team).
