Johnson was a delegate to the National Democratic Convention at Baltimore in 1860 and joined the majority of his delegation when they withdrew from the convention and united with the Southern wing of the party, which supported Breckenridge and Lane.
Rea and Santa Anna failed to take it before the approach of a relief column from Vera Cruz under Brig. Gen. Joseph Lane prompted Santa Anna to leave the siege to stop him.

The Action of Atlixco, also known as the "Atlixco Affair", on October 19, 1847, was a U.S. victory late in the Mexican-American War by an American force under General Joseph Lane that defeated the Light Corps of the Mexican Army under General Joaquín Rea and captured their base at Atlixco a week after Lane had driven Rea from his lines and relieved the Siege of Puebla.
After Oregon's official U.S. territory status, the Oregon Exchange Company became an entirely private enterprise continuing its operations until Governor Joseph Lane ruled the operation unconstitutional.
Along with Joseph Lane, he was instrumental in 1851 in blocking ratification of the Taney Point Treaty concerning the lands of the Clatsop and Nehalem tribes along the Oregon Coast.
