The local folklore says Annapoorneshwari Devi came from Kashi with two other Devis' (Kalarivathukkal Bhagavathy Temple and Madayi Kavu) and a boatman in a golden ship, got down at Azhi Theeram which is now known as Ayirum Thengu.
