In 1969 the party left the CPI(M)-led government and participated in the formation of a new government, led by Communist Party of India leader Achutha Menon as Chief Minister, together with CPI, RSP, KSP and Kerala Congress.
Markose played a significant role in the formation of the Kerala Congress, along with T. M. Jacob, K M Mani and P. J. Joseph.
In 2006, he contested as CPM – Independent candidate for Kerala Assembly Elections from Kallooppara and lost to Joseph M Puthussery (KCM -Kerala CongressMani.
On 30 April 20, P. J. Joseph resigned his ministerial post and declared that his Kerala Congress is going to merge with Kerala Congress (M).
