In 2011 Boris Kerner was awarded with the degree Professor at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany.
Traffic congestion can be reconstructed in space and time (Fig. 1) based on Boris Kerner’s three-phase traffic theory with the use of the ASDA and FOTO models introduced by Kerner.
Kerner introduced an alternative approach to traffic assignment based on his network breakdown minimization (BM) principle.

Some of these common features of traffic congestion define synchronized flow and wide moving jam traffic phases of congested traffic in Kerner’s three-phase traffic theory of traffic flow.
