KES, named after the reigning monarch, was formed in 1905 when Wesley College was merged with Sheffield Royal Grammar School (SRGS) on the site of the former on Glossop Road.

He was born in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire and educated at the King Edward VII School, Melton Mowbray and the College of St Mark and St John, Chelsea, where he trained to be a school teacher.
Born 25 July 1925 in Singapore, Abdul received his education at King Edward VII School in Perak and Raffles College in Singapore, and was eligible to be a teacher.
He was art master at Oundle School and then became professor of fine art and director of King Edward VII School of Art, Armstrong College, Durham University from 1926 to 1931.
