The last creation (the form being "Duke of Cumberland and Teviotdale") was for Ernest Augustus (later King of Hanover), fifth son of King George III of the United Kingdom.
The German Confederation, founded in 1815, was initially not in need of a navy, as it could rely on three members who commanded large fleets: The Grand Duke of Luxembourg as commander of the Royal Dutch Navy, the Duke of Holstein as the commander of the Danish Navy, and last but not least, the King of Hanover as commander of the British Royal Navy.
However, since he still claimed to be the legitimate King of Hanover as well, the German Reichsrat declared that he would disturb the peace of the empire if he ascended the ducal throne.
This post he filled for thirteen years, residing much at Berlin before his pupil's father became king of Hanover (in 1837).
Ernest, the new king of Hanover, on 8 August 1837 created him KCH; but at his urgent request allowed him to decline the assumption of the ordinary prefix of knighthood.
