While playing rugby league for South Sydney Kennedy was called up for active duty in 1941 for the Second World War where he also served on the Kokoda Track campaign for several months.

Kennedy also played for both the New South Wales and Australia representative sides and served Australia during the Second World War which saw him serve in the Kokoda Track campaign.

The interchanges/bridges along the expressway were all named after famous battles in which Australian forces fought, such as Long Tan, Kokoda, Tobruk and Kapyong.
He is well known for his actions with the 39th Battalion as the commander of 'B' Company during the First Battle of Kokoda and went missing in action on the 26 July 1942 near the village of Oivi.
