It is fed by the Saint Johns River which flows through central Florida which also feeds many of the nearby lakes such as Lake Monroe.

Although since the 1950s the city receives drinking water from the larger two larger reservoirs, Lake Lemon and (later) Lake Monroe, elsewhere in Monroe County, Griffy Lake is still considered as the potential "emergency" water supply source for the city.
