Parts of its eastern border (where the district borders on East Kazakhstan Province) run through the chain of lakes - Lakes Sasykkol, Koshkarkol, Alakol, and Zhalanashkol.
Lake Alakol and Lake Sasykkol, situated in the western (Kazakhstan) part of the valley, are the homes of the rare Dalmatian pelican and Relict Gull.
