The original members included Anna Joy, formerly the singer for punk bands Blatz and Gr'ups on vocals; Daniela Sea (as Dan-yella Dyslexia), also from the Gr'ups, played guitar; Rusten (as Shari Lambchop) was the drummer; Ulla Imd on vocals; Margaret Hitchcock was the trumpet player; Chloe Sherman (as Chloe Little Hope) played bass; and Lala Hulse on banjo and lap steel.
The song was later covered by a wide variety of artists including Jules Shear, Lambchop, Louis Phillipe, the Wondermints, and Tatsuro Yamashita.
In 2002, he released an album of duets named All Over Creation featuring Steve Earle, Lambchop, The Wildhearts and more.
As DJ Lambchop he released a cassette-only release called "Cashing in on Cool Cymru" in which he slags Kelly Jones over a break beat.
There is also a 1999 cover version by the German band In Extremo, a 2002 cover by the US-American band Lambchop, a 2003 cover by the German band Unheilig and a 2007 cover by the Swedish band Maryslim, featuring vocals from Jyrki 69 of The 69 Eyes.
Comparable in parts to the "exposed" approach of bands such as Red House Painters, Lambchop or Low, Together We're Stranger represents the band's sparsest and most directly emotional work to date.
