unusual facts about Late Miocene

Grass warbler

A fossil acrocoracoid from the Late Miocene (about 11 mya) of Rudabánya (NE Hungary) is quite similar to this bone in the present genus (Bernor et al. 2002).

Vatoa

It is composed wholly of limestone (Koroqara Limestone, Tokalau Limestone Group), probably Late Miocene in age.

551 Beirut earthquake

At a smaller scale, an uplifted vermetid bench, which indicates vertical movement of about 80 cm, is dated to the sixth century A.D. Continued uplift above this thrust since the late Miocene may explain the formation of the Mount Lebanon range.

Acentrophryne

Fossils of the type species, A. longidens, have been found in Late Miocene strata of Rosedale.

Manus Island

Manus is volcanic in origin and probably broke through the ocean's surface in the late Miocene, 8–10 million years ago.

Rhinodoras

Rhinodoras has been identified in the fossil record from the late Miocene Urumaco Formation (about 9 million years of age), Falcón State, Venezuela.

Spinyfin

This family is represented in the fossil record by the extinct Absalomichthys velifer Whitley 1933 from the Late Miocene of Southern California.

Urocolius

The same rationales presumably apply for undescribed but similar remains found in Late Miocene strata af Kohfidisch (Austria).
