Rutskoy was imprisoned in the Moscow Lefortovo prison until 26 February 1994, when he and other participants of both August 1991 and October 1993 crises, were granted amnesty by the new State Duma.
He remained under arrest (in Lefortovo Prison, Moscow) for 101 days before the Soviet authorities saw fit to release him, which happened after Foreign Minister Knut Frydenlund and Prime Minister Trygve Bratteli made efforts to get him free.
