The men's singles featured World No. 1, Australian Open and Wimbledon champion Roger Federer, French Open winner and Stuttgart titlist Rafael Nadal, and new ATP No. 3 and Miami Masters champion Novak Djokovic.
The year saw Federer accomplishing three major goals: winning his first French Open title, breaking Pete Sampras's record of 14 Grand Slam wins, and regaining the no. 1 ranking from Rafael Nadal.
In the 2004 Davis Cup he played against future world number one tennis player 16-year-old Novak Djokovic and lost 2–6, 2–6.
In the final of the tournament, he defeated Marcelo Ríos, who went on to reach the World No. 1 ranking less than four months later.
In 2006 ATP Umag he lost the 1st round match to future world number one tennis player Novak Djokovic 3–6, 3–6.
