The term "canal tunnel" does not seem to be commonly applied to tunnels used to conduct water (for irrigation, water supply, etc.), such as the 48 km long Arpa-Sevan tunnel in Armenia (see List of longest tunnels in the world), or a number of tunnels on the Irtysh–Karamay–Ürümqi Canal in China.
It is the third-longest road tunnel in the world after Norway's Lærdal Tunnel (24.5 km), and China's Zhongnanshan Tunnel (18 km).
