On 11 September 1897, in their first game of the new season of the London League and also at their new ground, Thames beat Brentford F.C. 1–0.
During the 1950s the club changed leagues several times; they were members of the Delphian League between 1951–52 and 1954–55, rejoined the London League in 1955 and then left to become founder members of the Aetolian League in 1959.

They immediately applied and were accepted into the London League, playing in Division One for the 1946–47 season.
The Town's first competitive game in their new home was against Epping Town in the London League on 27 August 1960, with the game finishing in a 1–1 draw.

In 1954 the club joined the Premier Division of the London League.
In 1957 they switched back to the London League, where they were champions for four consecutive seasons between 1958 and 1962.

In 1927, the club gained senior status and joined the Kent League, after several other senior leagues had rejected them, but after four seasons the financial constraints of travelling to Kent for away games saw them leave this league and switch to the London League.

It was a seamless transition for the club to make as Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Co. Ltd owner Arnold Hills was also president of the London League, and along with Thames Ironworks F.C. committee chairman Francis Payne, helped to draft the competition's rules.
In 1895 Hills helped to set up a football club for the Works' employees, Thames Ironworks F.C. and within their first two years they had entered the FA Cup and the London League.
