On October 11, 1854 Ludington loaned funds to George W. Ford for a sawmill operation in what was then known as the village of Pere Marquette in the northwestern part of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan.
In typical form for the State, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan turned out mainly Democratic, and the Lower Peninsula turned out divided, but more Republican - with the notable exception of Detroit's highly populated Wayne County, which voted overwhelmingly Democratic.
However, during the American Revolution, following some victories in the Ohio and Illinois territories, Patrick Sinclair felt it was necessary to move Fort Michilimackinac from its exposed location on the northernmost point of the lower peninsula of Michigan to Mackinac Island.
