After a successful debut, MacNeil became an assistant coach to Claude Ruel of the NHL Canadiens for the 1970–71 season.

MacNeil was appointed Executive Secretary of the British Columbia Security Council (BCSC) board and only accepted the position in an attempt to ensure the fair treatment for Japanese Canadians being uprooted from their homes on the West Coast after the Pearl Harbor attack during World War II.
More recently, until 1997 the second through ninth floors served as the headquarters for public television station WNET; the MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour was broadcast from the building.
He had also appeared on over 1,300 radio and television shows, including The MacNeil–Lehrer Report, Oprah and Larry King Live.
Dr. Lenczowski has testified before Congress and appeared on national television programs such as PBS’s MacNeil-Lehrer Newshour, American Interests, and Techno-Politics, CNN’s Crossfire and TalkBack Live, the Fox News Channel, and C-SPAN.
MacNeil ran as a Conservative Party of Canada in Cape Breton—Canso in the 2004 and 2006 federal elections, coming third and second respectively behind Liberal incumbent Rodger Cuzner.
MacNeil is also a keen cyclist, and in September 2009 cycled 1300 km of the Danube, from source to Budapest, on a fixed-gear track bike, for two cancer charities; the BBC filmed a documentary about him and his bike ride which took just a dozen cycling days.
The situation created a crisis for the ISAF forces in Afghanistan, on the very day that the British commanding officer General David Richards handed over charge of the ISAF team to an American, General Dan K. McNeill; MacNeil suggested that "surgical and deliberate" force would be used to evict the fighters from Musa Qala.
Elected a member of the American Antiquarian Society, 1974, and the Massachusetts Historical Society, 1977, MacNeil served as a trustee of the Augustus Saint-Gaudens Historic Site, Cornish, New Hampshire, since 1975.
He is perhaps best known for his portrayal of Montgomery MacNeil in the 1980 film Fame, Emil Antonowsky in RoboCop and Robert Romano on the NBC medical drama television series ER.
