In 1961, at the age of eighteen, Knoll won a scholarship from the New Orleans Opera Guild and the Metropolitan Opera Association to study voice at the Mannes College of Music in Greenwich Village in New York City.
A recipient of the Tanne Foundation's Award for achievement in the arts, in addition to his work as a pianist, Ponthus is the director of the Mannes College of Music's Institute and Festival for Contemporary Performance,
Members of the quartet teach at the Curtis Institute of Music, Mannes, Juilliard, Queens College, and the Bard College Conservatory of Music.
He is currently a faculty member at Mannes College The New School for Music, New York University's Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development in New York City, and University of Music Lausanne (HEMU), in Fribourg, Switzerland.
